Recently I got the chance to read a book titled “Making India Awesome” by Mr Chethan Bhagath. It is one of his non fictional works which I think is an eye opener and a MUST read for all Indians. Through this book the author conveys some ideas and suggestions to make India awesome by turning ourselves into awesome individuals and thus awesome citizens. A book review is exactly not what I have in mind but rather I just want to whisk upon a couple of points, 3 to be precise, which I found really interesting. And frankly speaking I stand as an ambassador for this book and I sincerely hope that my attempt ignites the interest to read this book in at least one of your mind.
Before going into the details let me make one thing clear that whatever I am going to talk about in the next couple of minutes is a combination of what is in the book and my own consciousness.
1. Excel in whatever you do
Moving to the first point – excel in whatever you do. As simple as the title says, try to top in whatever you are doing, when I say top you don’t necessarily be the best in your field but you should be definitely good in what you are doing. How do we do that? However small or large be the work, do it with love and passion. You should be the master of your work, we should get ourselves updated regularly so that we are not left out in the race, and we should constantly find improvement areas and work on them. Saying all that, let me add one more small but strong point – work smart and not just hard. Ask yourselves 2 questions – how smartly am I working how much smarter can I get? Imagine 1 billion people asking themselves this question and acting upon it,
2. We don’t have to politicians or government officials to bring about a change.
We have the power within us we just need to realize and respond. Starting from Mr M.K.Gandhi or Sachin Tendulkar I am sure you can name out more than 100 names who has influenced every Indian in one way or the other and who are in no way connected to any political parties or has held any important government positions. They were all just ordinary people like you and me who chose to chase their dreams and got touch a billion people’s lives. We can do whatever little we can to turn this nation awesome. We can start on as little as by vowing never to litter our roads again; there is a chance that someone, seeing your action, follows the lead; and even if you fail to influence someone its ok, the nation is at least free of your litter. It’s time we raise the bars from an ordinary common man to an awesome citizen.
3. Ladies – learn to live with B+ and Bs
Having talked about the power of common man let me move on the last topic of my talk which is dedicated to all ladies. Guys, you can always pass this message to the ladies of your life. This section of the book was all the more interesting coz there was this one point which I, being a lady, failed to realize till I read it out. It goes like this (not the exact words) “Ladies stop being too hard on yourself, stop aiming for an A+ always, learn to live with a B+ and B”. When I thought about its true – it’s not just me
but I have heard a lot of my friends feeling guilty for not being able to complete the office work because they had to rush home to take care of their sick kid, or not being able to attend a PTA meeting because of an important meeting, or not being able to make her spouse’s favorite roti coz she was really tired after an exhausting day. Relax; you can’t get all these awards always. We are no wonder women. We can’t set ourselves a highly unachievable target and then feel guilty for not having met them for the rest of our lives. Stop rating yourself, stop comparing to others, this is your life, enjoy what you do, be the best mom one day and the best roti maker another day; ditch all that and go for the best employee another day. Having filled up almost half of India’s population we won’t be able to deliver our best with all that stress. Let go of the ratings and if necessary, learn to be happy with a B or B+.
And now it is time for THE END. Thanks a ton for your patience and time. If you did enjoy the article a bit then do read the book coz its 10 times good; if you lost interest halfway then also read the book to get these points straight out of the horse’s mouth. Let’s all work to make our India awesome
